What happens in an Initial Appointment

Initial conversation
You’ll begin by discussing the reason for your appointment and how your symptoms developed. Don’t leave anything out – it could end up being important! Your physio will also be able to let you know whether you need scans or not. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Physical examination
We usually get the patient to go through a series of movements, and depending on the injury we’ll also perform a sequence of physical tests to look at the different muscles, ligaments and tendons.

Diagnosis
Using the information you gave along with a physical examination, are usually enough for your physio to arrive at a diagnosis, without the need for additional scans, x-rays or blood tests. At 4Lane Physiotherapy we promise to explain your diagnosis in terms you can understand as well as help to educate you on how to help your body to heal.

Treatment plan
Your physiotherapist will develop a treatment plan with you, taking into account your personal preferences as well as what will best suit your symptoms. This could include a number of different treatment options (hands on treatment, exercise etc.) Your Physio can also give you a referral for further imaging – for example, an x-ray – if required.

Your physiotherapist will be your guide on booking your next appointment. For most patients and conditions your physiotherapist will need to see you within a few days to see how your body responded to treatment. Often appointments will become more spaced over time depending on the progress and time frame for your condition.

Home Exercise
Your physio will usually send you home with a simple exercise that you can do with what you have at home to help reduce your symptoms. They will make sure it is comfortable and will also write it down for you.

Do I need a referral?
You don’t need a referral to see a physiotherapist, just call to make an appointment or book online.

What should I bring & what should I wear?

If you have any recent scans, x-rays, referral letters (from other healthcare professionals) or reports related to the reason for seeking out an appointment, you should bring them along with you. Also if you have private health you should bring your digital or physical card with you to claim on the spot.

Wear or bring clothing that allows the injured body part and its surrounding body parts to be easily seen by your physio. If you feel uncomfortable wearing this type of clothing into the clinic, you can always pack them in a bag and get changed when you arrive.
