Initial conversation Physical examination Diagnosis Treatment plan Your physiotherapist will be your guide on booking your next appointment. For most patients and conditions, your physiotherapist will need to see you within a few days to see how your body responds to treatment. Often, appointments will be spaced further apart over time, depending on your condition’s progress and the time frame. Home Exercise Do I need a referral? What happens in an Initial Appointment
You’ll begin by discussing the reason for your appointment and how your symptoms developed. Don’t leave anything out – it could end up being important! Your physio will also be able to let you know whether you need scans. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!
We usually have the patient go through a series of movements, and, depending on the injury, we’ll also perform a sequence of physical tests to assess the muscles, ligaments, and tendons.
Using the information you gave, along with a physical examination, is usually enough for your physio to arrive at a diagnosis without the need for additional scans, x-rays or blood tests. At 4Lane Physiotherapy, we promise to explain your diagnosis in terms you can understand, as well as help to educate you on how to help your body to heal.
Your physiotherapist will develop a treatment plan with you, taking into account your personal preferences as well as what will best suit your symptoms. This could include a variety of treatment options (hands-on treatment, exercise, etc.). Your Physio can also give you a referral for further imaging – for example, an X-ray – if required.
Your physio will usually send you home with a simple exercise that you can do with what you have at home to help reduce your symptoms. They will make sure it is comfortable and will also write it down for you.
You don’t need a referral to see a physiotherapist, just call to make an appointment or book online.

A conversation about your progress
You’ll begin by discussing how your symptoms have been since your first appointment. Your physio might as you questions about your pain, things that have made it worse or better, how your exercises went etc . Don’t leave anything out – it could end up being important! Please ask questions!
Your physiotherapist may spend 1 – 2 minutes quickly reassessing any important tests to check the different muscles, ligaments, or tendons, and compare them after they finish your treatment session on the day.
Your physio will refer back to your original treatment plan, taking into account your personal preferences as well as what will best suit your symptoms, such as dry needling, rehabilitation, soft tissue therapy, mobilisation, shockwave therapy, ultrasound, taping, etc.
Your physiotherapist will be your guide on booking your next appointment. Depending on your progress and the nature of the injury, appointments will often become more spaced over time.
Your physio will usually review your exercises and add a second simple exercise you can do at home to help address the underlying cause of your problem. They will make sure it is comfortable and will also write it down for you.

If you have any recent scans, X-rays, referral letters (from other healthcare professionals) or reports related to the reason for seeking out an appointment, you should bring them along with you. Also, if you have private health insurance, you should bring your digital or physical card to claim on the spot. Wear or bring clothing that allows the injured body part and its surrounding body parts to be easily seen by your physio. If you feel uncomfortable wearing this type of clothing into the clinic, you can always pack them in a bag and get changed when you arrive. What should I bring & what should I wear?
