Taping

Taping is most often used as an complementary and temporary technique. People often use tape as a protective mechanism for an existing acute or chronic injury as well as to prevent re-occurance.

Taping is commonly used by physiotherapists to:

  • Relieve your pain
  • Improve joint stability
  • Enhance confidence
  • Reduce injury recurrence
  • Prevent injury
  • Reduce strain on injured or vulnerable tissues
  • Enhance awareness of the joint/proprioception
  • Compress in the presence of edema

Aims of taping:

  1. Stabilize or support an injury
  2. Relieve pain by de-loading vulnerable or painful structures

Types of tape:

  • Rigid
  • Kineseotape

What happens at my appointment

You will be assessed by the physiotherapist at your first visit to confirm that you are an appropriate candidate for taping.

If you book a Physiotherapy appointment your physio will ensure you are educated about your condition and what you can do in conjunction with treatment – activity modification, specific exercises, hands on treatment, assessing any other contributing issues such as posture, tightness/weakness of other muscle groups etc.

If you book a taping only appointment – your physiotherapist will not be able to provide education or thorough assessment.

Will I always have to tape?

Depending on the injury/issue but not necessarily! Your body can adapt over time to not need taping if you are diligent with your rehabilitation. Depending on the type of activity you want to return to you may choose to continue to tape to prevent the injury from reocurring for example to play a football/netball game.

Are there any side effects?

Some people do have allergies to different tapes, your Physiotherapist will use fiximol underneath your tape to reduce the likelihood of skin irritation.

Who should I book with?

All of our Physiotherapy team can tape to a high standard – you can book a specific taping appointment if you want taping only, otherwise a standard Physiotherapy appointment will be perfect.
