πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ Winter Sports Are Back – Are You Ready? ❄️ W πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ Winter Sports Are Back – Are You Ready? ❄️

With the winter sports season kicking off, many of us are getting back into footy, netball, running, surfing and more. While staying active is key to your health β€” injuries can sometimes come with it.

The good news? πŸ‘‰ The benefits of exercise far outweigh the risks β€” and if injury does occur, we’re here to get you back AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

⚠️ Types of Sports Injuries

πŸ’₯ Acute Injuries
Happen suddenly β€” think muscle tears, ligament sprains or impact injuries from a fall, tackle or twist.

⏳ Overuse Injuries
Build up over time due to repeated stress β€” common in tendons, joints and muscles when load exceeds capacity.

πŸ” Common Injuries We See

Muscle Strains
Sudden pulls or tears (hamstrings, calves, quads) β€” often during sprinting or explosive movements.
πŸ‘‰ Proper rehab is key to avoiding re-injury.

Ligament Sprains
Common in ankles and knees from twisting or landing awkwardly.
πŸ‘‰ Stability and strength are crucial for recovery.

Tendon Injuries (Tendinopathy)
Gradual onset pain (Achilles, knee, shoulder) due to overload.
πŸ‘‰ Tendons need progressive loading, not just rest.

Overuse & Joint Injuries
Often linked to training errors, poor technique or load management.
πŸ‘‰ Addressing the cause is just as important as treating symptoms.

πŸŒͺ️ What is Vertigo? (Benign Paroxysmal Positional πŸŒͺ️ What is Vertigo? (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo)

Ever rolled over in bed or looked down and suddenly felt like the room was spinning? You may have experienced BPPV, one of the most common causes of vertigo.

BPPV is a condition affecting the inner ear, often causing:
β€’ Sudden dizziness
β€’ A spinning sensation (vertigo)
β€’ Nausea
β€’ Brief episodes triggered by certain head movements

These episodes usually last seconds to minutes and often occur when rolling in bed, looking up, or bending down.

🦻 Why Does It Happen?

Inside your inner ear are tiny calcium crystals that normally sit in a structure called the utricle.

Sometimes these crystals become dislodged and move into one of the semicircular canals (the structures that help control balance).

When this happens, the crystals disrupt the normal movement of fluid in the canals, sending incorrect signals to your brain β€” which makes it feel like the room is spinning even when you’re still.

πŸ‘₯ Who Gets BPPV?

BPPV can occur at any age, but it’s more common in older adults. It may also be linked to:
β€’ Head trauma
β€’ Inner ear infections
β€’ Migraines
β€’ Diabetes
β€’ Prolonged head positions
β€’ Reduced blood flow

Often, it occurs without any obvious cause.

🩺 How Can Physiotherapy Help?

Physiotherapists can perform specific vestibular tests to determine whether your dizziness is caused by BPPV.

If confirmed, treatment involves guided head-positioning manoeuvres that help move the crystals out of the semicircular canals and back where they belong.

The good news?

✨ Most people experience significant improvement within 1–3 sessions, often combined with simple home exercises.

⚠️ When to Seek Medical Advice

If your dizziness is constant, not related to head movement, or accompanied by symptoms such as:
β€’ Vision disturbances
β€’ Hearing loss
β€’ Blackouts
β€’ Severe headaches
β€’ Difficulty speaking or swallowing
β€’ Facial numbness

You should seek medical attention immediately.

βœ… Who Should I Book With?
All of our Physiotherapy team at 4Lane Physiotherapy are experienced in assessing and treating BPPV and other causes of dizziness.
