🦶 Falls Prevention – Stay Strong, Stay Independent 🦶 Falls Prevention – Stay Strong, Stay Independent

Falls are more common than many people realise. It’s estimated that 1 in 3 people over 65 experience at least one fall every year. And falls don’t just affect the individual — they also impact families, carers and support networks.

A fall is defined as an unintentional loss of balance that results in coming to rest on the ground or at a lower level. The good news? Most falls are preventable.

⚠️ Common Risk Factors

• Previous falls
• Reduced strength
• Poor balance or body awareness
• Dizziness or vertigo
• Vision or hearing changes
• Slippery/uneven surfaces
• Inappropriate footwear
• Chronic conditions (e.g. Parkinson’s, Diabetes)
• Certain medications
• Reduced fitness or nutrition

Many of these factors can be improved with the right support.

💪 1️⃣ Exercise is Key

Strong evidence shows that targeted exercise reduces fall risk. Programs should include:
✔ Strength training
✔ Balance exercises
✔ Flexibility work
✔ Endurance activities

Examples include:
• Sit-to-stands
• Heel raises
• Squats
• Stepping drills
• Single-leg balance
• Walking practice

Even simple habits like standing on one leg while brushing your teeth can help!

Aim for at least 2 hours per week of structured exercise — group classes and home programs both work well.

🧠 2️⃣ A Whole-Person Approach

Falls prevention isn’t just about exercise. It may also involve:
• Medication review with your GP
• Footwear advice
• Home safety assessment
• Removing trip hazards & adding supports (e.g. rails, shower chairs)

✨ Most falls are preventable.
If you or someone you know would benefit from falls prevention advice or a tailored exercise program, our Physiotherapy team is here to help.

📞 Contact the clinic or book an appointment today to stay confident, strong and steady on your feet.

⚠️ What is Whiplash? Whiplash occurs when the neck ⚠️ What is Whiplash?
Whiplash occurs when the neck is forced rapidly backward and forward, creating an acceleration–deceleration force. This sudden movement can injure structures including:
• Muscles
• Ligaments
• Joints
• Intervertebral discs
• Nerves

Although most commonly caused by car accidents, whiplash can also occur from:
• Sporting collisions
• Falls
• Direct blows to the head
• Physical assault

🔍 Common Symptoms
• Neck pain and stiffness
• Headaches
• Upper back and shoulder pain
• Reduced neck movement
• Muscle tightness and sensitivity

In more complex cases, patients may develop heightened sensitivity and persistent pain, highlighting the importance of early assessment and treatment.

✅ What Helps Recovery?

The good news? Evidence-based treatment shows that movement and exercise are key to recovery.

Recommended management includes:
• Staying active and avoiding prolonged rest
• Gentle range of motion exercises
• Postural strengthening and endurance training
• Gradual return to normal activities
• Physiotherapy-guided rehabilitation programs

Physiotherapy may also include:
• Hands-on treatment
• Individualised exercise prescription
• Taping
• Massage
• Dry needling (if appropriate)

💡 Early treatment improves outcomes
The sooner rehabilitation begins, the better your chances of a full recovery and avoiding long-term symptoms.

📞 If you’ve recently been in a car accident, a sporting collision, or experienced neck pain from trauma, we’re here to help.
Our Physiotherapy team will guide your recovery with an individualised treatment plan.

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy is an effective, Extracorporeal shock wave therapy is an effective, evidence based, non-invasive treatment modality for many tendinopathies, such as tennis elbow, achilles tendinopathy, patella tendinopathy and other muscle and fascia related injuries like plantarfasciitis.

Many chronic tendon injuries, are tricky to manage, as many of you probably know. This is due to the complex healing properties and collagen makeup of tendons. Shock wave therapy can help break down damaged tissue and induce tendon healing and speed up the process! This combined with specific tendon rehabilitation exercises will get you back doing what you love!

If you have an ongoing tendon injury or pain, contact 4Lane Physiotherapy today on 9756 7424 and book in for shock wave treatment!

🏥 The AC Joint – What You Need to Know The acromi 🏥 The AC Joint – What You Need to Know

The acromioclavicular (AC) joint is where the acromion of the shoulder blade (scapula) meets the clavicle (collarbone) at the top of your shoulder.

⚠️ How Does an AC Joint Injury Happen?
AC joint sprains are common sports injuries, often caused by a direct fall onto the point of the shoulder.

Common symptoms include:
• Swelling and bruising over the top of the shoulder
• Localised pain and tenderness
• Pain with shoulder movement
• Difficulty sleeping due to night pain
• In some cases, a visible “step deformity” where the joint appears separated

Your Physiotherapist will assess and grade the injury based on severity and how the injury occurred.

🔍 Signs & Functional Limitations
• Pain that may radiate into the neck, shoulder or down the arm
• Pain when reaching across the body, overhead or behind the back
• Difficulty carrying or lifting
• Reduced shoulder strength and confidence

🩺 How Is an AC Joint Injury Treated?

Early management:
• Rest
• Ice
• Compression
• Elevation

Rehabilitation:
• Grade 1–2 injuries are usually managed conservatively with Physiotherapy
• Higher grade injuries (3+) may require surgical input
• Manual therapy to reduce pain, stiffness and apprehension
• Progressive strengthening of the shoulder and scapular muscles
• Taping may be used for additional support during return to activity

🏃‍♂️ Return to Sport & Full Function
Recovery time depends on injury grade, typically 2–6 weeks for lower-grade sprains. Return is considered when:
✔ Full, pain-free shoulder movement
✔ Normal shoulder strength in all positions
✔ Sport-specific tasks are pain-free
✔ Taping can be used for added confidence and support

🤝 Need help with a shoulder injury?
Our Physiotherapy team can assess, treat and guide your recovery safely back to work, sport and everyday life. Just want to know more about AC joint injuries? Check out our blog at https://birdeye.cx/56k0e5
