🎾 Tennis Elbow vs Golfer’s Elbow — What’s Really G 🎾 Tennis Elbow vs Golfer’s Elbow — What’s Really Going On? 🏌️‍♂️

Elbow pain is one of the most common reasons people seek physiotherapy — and two big culprits are Tennis Elbow and Golfer’s Elbow. Despite their names, you don’t need to play tennis or golf to develop them!

They typically affect people aged 35–60 and often occur in your dominant arm.

🔍 Why Do They Happen?

Both conditions are linked to:
✔ Repetitive arm use
✔ Heavy lifting
✔ Vibrating tools
✔ Technique or equipment changes
✔ AND interestingly — underuse of the elbow too!

✨ Signs & Symptoms

🎾 Tennis Elbow
Pain on the outside of the elbow
Discomfort with gripping or wrist extension
Sometimes weakness or pain into the back of the hand/wrist

🏌️ Golfer’s Elbow
Pain on the inside of the elbow
Pain may radiate into the palm/wrist
Weak grip and discomfort with lifting/holding objects

🔬 What’s Actually Happening?

Changes occur in the tendon fibres — similar to what we see in Achilles tendon issues.
Inflammation, altered collagen, and microscopic tearing increase pain and sensitivity.

Patello-femoral pain syndrome can have many contri Patello-femoral pain syndrome can have many contributing factors. It is generally characterised by pain around and behind the knee cap with high loading activities, such as running, squatting, and stair climbing. It occurs as the joint reaction force increases as we bend our knee under load, and the knee cap's alignment or 'direction of pull' has been effected. It can often be mistaken for ITB friction syndrome, which involves the ITB rubbing against the side of the knee bone, causing pain and inflammation.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis, causing joint pain, stiffness and reduced function. But here’s something many people don’t realise 👇

📸 Scans don’t tell the whole story
X-rays can show “degeneration” or “wear and tear”, but this doesn’t always match how you feel. Some people have “severe” OA on imaging and no pain, and others have lots of pain with only mild changes.

❌ Myth: “My knees are bone on bone, I shouldn’t load them.”
✅ Reality: Avoiding activity often makes things worse. Research shows that joint-loading exercise does not damage knee cartilage in people with, or at risk of, knee OA. In fact, the right amount of loading can help keep cartilage healthier over time.

🏃‍♂️ Running & squats don’t automatically wear out your knees.
Studies following runners over many years found no higher rate of knee OA than non-runners. The key is getting the dose and type of exercise right for you.

Foam rolling has been hyped for years — from loosening “tight” muscles to boosting recovery and performance. But what does the science actually say? 👀

Here’s what we know:

💡 Foam rolling doesn’t physically “break up” knots or fascia.
The pressure just isn’t strong enough to cause structural changes in muscle tissue.

✨ What it can do:

Improve short-term flexibility and joint range of motion (though effects last ~10 mins).

Help reduce feelings of muscle soreness after exercise.

Enhance relaxation and pain tolerance — thanks to your nervous system, not mechanical changes.

🏃‍♀️ Performance boost?
Rolling before training might help elite athletes with sprint or power output, but the difference is tiny for most people.

🩵 Recovery benefits?
Yes — rolling after workouts can make you feel better and recover faster by reducing DOMS (delayed muscle soreness).

📏 Best practice:
✅ 3–5 sets of 20–30 seconds per muscle
✅ 3–5 times per week for lasting benefits

In short — foam rolling can be a great tool for flexibility and recovery, but it’s not a magic fix. Think of it as a nervous system “reset,” not a muscle “repair.”
